Growth

Below I have included before and after examples of my work. The before examples were from a year ago, before I took the Emerging Technologies course. The after examples are projects I completed in the course.

The newer work shows tremendous growth. I learned how to cite images used in my presentations. Before taking the course, I had no idea that certain images on Google are not to be used or shared. I was unaware of what a creative commons license was. When comparing the before and after examples, I also realized that I did not know how to insert links within text. I would just insert the entire hyperlink. My documents and presentations now look more appealing and organized because I know how to utilize the tools on different platforms. Another improvement that stuck out to me was how I wrote objectives. In the Classroom Management Plan presentation, I only included one objective and it was very broad. In my Rocks & Minerals presentation, I gave clear and specific objectives. I also included the state standard that aligned with each objective in parentheses next to it. This helps the teacher and students see what standards they are focusing on for the lesson at hand.

The hardest areas for me to master were how to write learning objectives and use images correctly. I would have thought that I would have been taught how to write learning objectives earlier in my major classes, however I never was told that mine were not clear enough. I was able to overcome these obstacles because Professor Proctor included a how-to video in one of the assignments and also commented on my work with tips and advice. I learn better through visuals rather than reading an article, so this made it a lot easier for me to learn. Looking back, I can see how unclear and unspecific my objectives were. Citing images is another area that was hard for me to master. Like I mentioned before, I was unaware that I could not just take a picture from Google and use it for my work. I thought that all pictures on the internet were free game. However, I learned in this course that there are tools on Google that allow you to search through the public domain. I also learned about certain websites that people can search and use pictures from like Pixabay, Flickr, etc.

A standard that this work connects to is:

  • Innovative Designer (4b) Students select and use digital tools to plan and manage a design process that considers design constraints and calculated risks.

  • Creative Communicator (6a) Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication. (6b) Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations. (6d) Students publish or present content that customizes the message and medium for their intended audiences.

  • Digital Citizen (2c) Students demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the rights and obligations of using and sharing intellectual property.

My before and after examples prove that I grew in these standards by showing my growth when utilizing tools, correctly citing pictures, and respecting the rights of using/sharing intellectual property.
